Jaguar has unveiled the second model to wear the R-S badge at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show in the form of the XFR-S. This means that the souped up variant of the XF joins the XKR-S in Jaguar’s exclusive 300km/h club.

Underneath the hood of the XFR-S is the same 5.0-litre V8 lump found in the XFR but tuned to produce an extra 40bhp and 55Nm of torque. This translates to a century sprint of just 4.4 seconds and top speed electronically limited at 300kph. Transmission comes in the form of an eight-speed gearboox with ‘Quickshift’ tech, which is basically an intelligent system that reads road conditions, throttle and steering input, using those information to return the quickest gear shifts possible.

Aerodynamic extras are noticeable at a quick glance of the car and these include deeper air-sills, aero-blades and even a bootlid spoiler. All of these physical add-ons, most of which are sculpted from carbon fibre, contribute to an overall reduction in lift by a whopping 68%.

Making this a whole new animal is also the car’s modified suspension which is now a significant 30% stiffer than before. It also rides on wider 20-inch alloy wheels and all of these changes point towards a harder but more involving driving experience in the XFR-S.

Jaguar has clearly signified its intent to produce a capable sports sedan by transforming the XF into the XFR-S that has now broken cover. The figures listed are impressive and show that this could truly be a genuine competitor to the M5 but only time will tell if it can live up to that mammoth of a task.
